I'm new here and have come in search of information pertaining to nailheads. We are building a hot rod, 36' 5 window ford coupe, and recently purchased a running nailhead with 55K on it to eventually put in the car. It is a '61 401 nailhead. Our question is what transmissions (automatic or manual) will bolt up with this? We obviously want something strong but dont want to purchase an adapter since they are so expensive. any ideas?

Most of the nailheads with automatics were TH400's plenty strong for anything anyone wants to do with it. The Sticks were mostly T10s or super T10s Hope that helps ......on a side note I have a nailhead th400 I would sell cheap if your looking for one. It was in a 70K car I parted out several years ago. Its been on my shelf ever since.

61 401 would have most likely been a dynaflow automatic trans and the end of the crank may be different then the one for the turbo 400

Welcome to our site.
All Nailheads have the unique problem that you have now, which is their unique transmission addiction. I'm sorry to say but you will probably need an adapter to adapt any kind of decent transmission.

To bolt up anything other than a DnyaFlow will require SOME work, but not an impossibility. Another '64-'66 "Nail" TH400 will bolt up without an adapter. On the down side you will need a '64-'66 flexplate, a '64-'66 starter or an approx. a 3/8ths. to 1/2" spacer to use the existing starter & an adapter for the rear of the crank. Using a standard trans. will require the same along with the corresponding bellhousing.
