Amazing that the trunk floor and wells are in such good shape.
How's the floorpan under the rear seat?
Look like someone was very lucky. There should be much more missing metal on that car.

First test fit? How many times ya think you can do that again!
You must have had practice!!!

MichaelGarrison

I will have to say really about 50-60% of the time it will fall in place like that. Not bragging or complaining but its not that hard once youve done simular cuts on other cars and trucks. It does take experience however. If a novice bodyman had someone to guide them it wouldnt be as easy, but they could do it too. Personally I use the "see it done vision" as a body man and that helps alot.

floor pan under rear seat is fine as are the fronts. nothing needed there. the trunk floor does have some issues. not as bad as you would think, but it needs replaced.

Well tonight it fits better and its all vice gripped in where it will be after I clean all the surface rust away to get it welded. I have to get out the sand blaster now over the weekend and push it outside so my garage wont be a disaster!!! I also need to make a couple more patches in a couple areas as you can see in the following pictures. enjoy....................

Nice work guys.....

If you are at some of the car shows .....take a look at the area circled on the A-body cars. You'll see alot of the cars no longer have a seam........ and then the guys claim that they have a rust free car. I have seen alot of bad things when starting to grind into a project that someone else has "mudded over".
From the job you are doing, I am quite happy to see it cut out and replaced the right way. Nice work!:TU:

Whenever someone muds over the seam the paint always cracks and peels.

Why do people do this?:DOU:

I don't think the ragtops have the seams, since the panels are all different than a HT. I think they leaded those in.I could be wrong though.

Thats great work Mike ! I saw the pics on V8 but didn't realize it was your handy work. Whats the ballpark $ on a repair like this done right? Sadly, my car needs the panel replaced too. Its not near that bad, but something I'll get taken care eventually, hopefully this summer. :TU:

Well we agreed on a ball park price to do this and so far it is everything I thought it was to repair. The work is really about to start. Up to this point the cutting and trimming is easy. I might even make it look easier than it is sometimes (comes with the experience I have in doing rust repair) (we live in Kansas!!:DOU: ) The next step is to sand blast out all the areas to get the metal looking good so we can see all the real problems. I would say as long as you have a good part to install here the rest will be easier then. That way the costs are more in your favor. Doing a job like this is a $750 plus or minus ball park and that includesgoing all the way to primed sealed and ready to paint.

Thanks for the input Mike, thats really awsome work. I have a couple shops around here that do resto work but I'll be lucky to get it done in that range $ I'm sure. I was figuring at least double that, but you gotta do what you gotta do..........:CRAP:

Very nice Mike. Looks to be a nice solid repair.
Whenever I see the end result to this particular repair I think in hindsight that it would be nice to see someone show this in detail with many pictures.
Some people need to see the detail and fab work that is involved even before the weld process.
Another area is the deck filler to quarterpanel seam. People seem to be all over the place with this. I've seen them welded, leaded, puttied, caulked, and seam sealer. Good opportunity to show those that are interested.

PS. You ever think of doing this to make a living?:T:

I would say if you want all your Rust Repair and Bodywork and Paint Done Right Send it to Mike Garrison. You can tell from the Pictures that Mike Doesn't Cut Corner's. Like lot's of other's do. When you see them do good work you have them Do it all. A good Bodyman is hard to find.
