Hi,
Newbie here... Is it possible to have a 1970 GS 455 (1231738) block and not have an engine ID code of SR? Could the engine have come from another type of car? I can't see any numbers or info on the side of the block... Any info would be great... Also if I posted in the wrong forum. Forgive me...

The engine 2 letter ID is stamped into the DECK of the block between the rear(5&7) sparkplugs on the driver's side. The last 8 digits of the VIN are stamped into the DECK between the front(1&3) sparkplugs on the driver's side. If the engine has been rebuilt and the blocked has been decked (resurfaced), the stampings will be gone. Normally, it takes a lot of cleaning and light to see the letters.

Larry,
Thanks for the info. I'm planning a manifolds for headers swap in the comming weeks and plan on spending sometime looking for numbers... I'm hoping the heavy red paint the previous owner used to detail the engine is hiding something. Thanks again..
