I have an all stock Buick 231 3.8L V6 from 1981 and I've been running AC Delco R45TS spark plugs with a gap of .040 in it for a while. I checked out the manual for the car and in the back under Revisions it says the 1981 Buick 231 3.8L V6 should be running a gap of .080.

Should I change the spark plugs to a .080 gap? I've had people say a smaller gap is better while others have said a bigger gap is better so I decided to come here to get some input from people who actually know these engines.

.080 thousands gap is correct for a 231 two barrel engine with HEI. Running a gap smaller than that only overheats the spark plug tips and will eventually get so hot the electrode overheat and may fall off. My suggestion is you go with the factory setting.
