Buick red paint for exhaust ports?

IS there any secret to stop the pretty buick red paint from burning off the exhaust ports on my heads? I have used the Krylon but that"s only good to about 300 degrees. Any high temp sprays or paints that can be recommended in correct buick red? Or is it just going to burn regardless? VHT has a bright red, not sure how close.

I use the VHT as a base & then put the Krylon over it.

I don't think you'll ever actually stop the paint from burning at the exhaust ports and crossover.

That thought definately crossed my mind Frank! My wife yanked it back right back AWAY! Will try VHT red then krylon red, see what happens

you mean all that armorall you spray in there isnt helping the paint hold up?

There is a way to have the paint hold up better on the exhaust ports, from what I've heard. The trick is to get all the oils out of the casting before you paint and that is best accomplished by running the engine until it is hot to "boil" the oils out of the castings. This would involve either running the engine on a stand or pulling it a second time after it is installed in the chassis to paint it.

This is what Kleiner told me he did. My cars are not good examples as they really never run long enough to get hot enough to burn the paint but I've seen other of his restorations that do and have held up remarkably well. I'm sure "some" touch up would be required over time.

Try Bill Hirsch. Rated for 600* & appears to be the correct color Buick Red.

I've heard the way to do it, is to, put the heads into a "shop" oven and to get all the moisture out of the heads before painting. Along the lines of what Brad said.
