whatz up w/my quick shifting regal?

i have an '85 regal t-type. It is 100%stock and has 125k mi. and original tranny. Does anyone know what would make it shift too fast into 2nd and then right into 3rd as i'm leaving a stop? it seems to do it after the car has run for a little bit and engine is good and hot. yes i know it has some miles but it has done it for awhile. when it operates properly, it shifts hard like it should so i have a hard time believing tranny is ready to go. overdrive is not effected and operates fine. is there vacuum that may cause this? this is driving me nuts. thanks for any advise.

Maybe the detent cable is not adjusted correctly. On the drivers side of the carb is where you make the adjustment. Check for slack in the cable. Maybe try adjusting it a little tighter???

yes, I did try that already. When I tightened the cable it was better but then I lost the o/d. I adjusted just a hair back and I was back where I started. I tried several times but it's one way or the other. Is there such a super fine line on the adjustment on this cable?
Can you think of anything else that may cause quick shifting? I appreciate the feedback and any advise I am willing to try. Thanks
