backfiring

i had a spare set of wires sitting in the backseat of my car. i never had time to put them on. my friend thought he would help out, he has keys to it too, and changed the wires. it looks correct, but i don't know about the 7 and 8 wires. last night i went to fire it up, and take it around the block as i do almost every night and it wouldnt start. rather it would catch, backfire and die. this is becauses of the wires right? any one know the wiring pattern on a gm HEI distributor?

i believe the firing order is 18436572, is this true. i know the distributor spins clockwise.

Be sure the #1 wire is in the spot in the cap where the rotor is pointing when the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

If it ran before the wires were changed and now it doesn't, then it is the wires.
