Interested in doing a all Buick Auto-x event @ the BPG

I've notice at the BPG events that a good size portion of the asphalt in the trailer parking area not being used, maybe this could be held there?

I have posted this also on several other discussion forum boards, ie.. V8BUICK.com, turbobuick.com. turbobuicks.com,teambuick.com,gbodyforum.com.
the response seems to be ,in the realm of ... "if you build it, we will come".., But I honestly beleive, with the first one up in running, it will spark alot more intrest.

I love events like the BPG, and the GS Nats, but sit behind your car for a carshow for 4 hrs, or stab n steer on a 1/4 dragstrip, for 13-9 seconds. then what?
How about slinging our Buicks on some nasty tight turns and seat time in the 40 second range?

Now Im with the Indiana Chapter of the GSCA, and i spoke to them about hosting.. they suggested I start by asking you guys first, them we would go from there.

I believe the Auto-X event would Generate more spark even from the younger crowd, that way the Buick is not always associated as the "Old Man's Grandpa Car", but a strong contender on the curves, the street, and the strip.

Would this be a great additional to the program, generate more cars .

Why not. I have the backround in SCCA, started in Auto-X. (1980) Even goin slow and not sideways (sideways Phil ) I bet Granpa can still move. A loose fast course please cause the Buick needs room. I
isnt like the mazdas were!

I went drifting last July 4th in my 4800lb Duece and a Quarter convertible.

Guys there is one small tiny problem we failed to consider here....... insurance.

My take on this, is the track facility is covered for drag racing that is done on a sanctioned, inspected, approved track. I would venture to say the policy is related with the NHRA which is for sanctioned drag racing. The rest of the grounds, such as grandstands, parking lot, pits, eating area, etc would also be covered for injuries and mishaps such as slip and fall, fender benders, even a pedestrian getting hit by a car driving within the limit.

To have auto cross set up in a lot I would think would NOT be covered by their policy. First off safety. I would assume cones would be set up to mark off the racing course, but the way insurance companies would see it is, what provisions are set up to protect spectators from an out of control 3500 pound car? The track may leave us with no choice at all by saying no way, unless of course the event organizers have the boat load of cash to buy a rider or an out right insurance policy to hold it. And even if they did that still won;t be a given as the insurance company will have their requirements for safety, which there would be no way it can be done.

If the facility already has a area set up for this then I would think it is possible, such as Raceway Park Englishtown, NJ, where they have an auto cross and drifting race course set up. National Trails to the best of my knowledge does not.

Just my take on it. Yes it sucks, and yes I do love the idea. But maybe 25 years ago no one would care, not now. All you need is one stubbed toe and you will have a bus load of lawyers doing their own auto cross to grab that injured cash cow.

The other question is this;
If something like this is done then who would be putting it together and who would be running it.

Due to the amount of people we have running things now, the coverage is already running too thin as it is. If something like this is added then others need to step up to the plate to run/set everything up.

With the Stage 1 get together, as well as the regular events happening next year, there is no way we could "man" anything else.

Also last year we did eat up quite a bit of the paved parking lot with the GSX Reunion and hope to do the same this year with the Stage 1 get together, so that has to be taken into account.

I agree the track may have some very specific rules. It would be interesting to know if any other club that goes there has done this like the Mopar Nationals. I know when Year One had events in the past they were able to provide Autocross and now Goodguys offers it. I did notice the Goodguys Autocross was very small not allowing for high speeds and was in a fenced area at the Kansas Speedway. I wonder if the local SCCA would have any knowledge of this and if they would consider sponsoring an event during the BPG Nationals. Just thinking out loud.

well as stated in other thread if you were interested I would contact NTR...but as there was no reply I have not inquired...if you are interested please let me know via PM as I do not check all threads going...still think that based on last years turnout and how much of the facility we used an Auto X might be out of the question as we anticipate even more people this year...BUT if you have enough people interested and people to hep you with timers and cones etc...I am surewe can find out how much Extra Cost it would be....questions to consider are who sets up the coarse and provides cones...flags etc....again if you are really interested please let me know what is involved as I have no clue
