carb question

Hi everyone,

I have a '70 455 with a fairly big cam (Kenne Bell Maxi 3: 232 intake, 260 exhaust @ .050"), non-stage heads, headers and Performer manifold and Q-jet. I drive the car only on the street and have to spend at least two minutes at about 2000 rpm otherwise it'll die when I let go of the throttle. I'm guessing the thermostatic choke on the Q-jet isn't working too good. I like the idea of the spreadbore carbs for driveability and part throttle performance and want to stay with that but Q-jet specialists seem like they're getting hard to find, so I've been looking at Edelbrock carbs. Does anyone have any experience with these? Or should I just try and find a Q-jet specialist and have mine rebuilt? I'm in the Chicago area, in case anyone knows of someone who can rebuild my carb.

Little clarification is in order. I have to spend two minutes with my foot on the gas when I first start the car. After it warms up it's ok. Maybe that's just life with a big cam, I don't know.

Also do your primary throttle blades have a 5 16 hole in the front area on each? I t will help with getting more air at idle.

Even though this is an old thread, I strongly disagree with the idea of drilling holes in the primary throttle blades in hopes of compensating for poor idle air flow. This was a popular band-aid in the '70's. Modifying the idle air bleeds and idle bypass should be done rather than drilling holes in throttle blades.

why not just check old one to see if its operating correctly, just need a vacum gauge unit. Also has carb. ever been apart?? Sounds to me you idle circuit is way off base,
